I thank God that I am very blessed and fortunate that I am able to attend the wyd2011 in Madrid. There are many catholics and friends out there who would not be able to share this experience with me in person for what ever reasons.
In 2008, it was unfortunate that i was not able to attend the wyd in sydney. However, thanks to the wonders of modern technology; primarily the internet , i was able to share in the excitement of the pilgrims, and to follow the general events and happenings in Sydney.
As such, i decided that for this WYD i will do my part to share my experience with those who are not able to make the journey, thanks to the wonders of modern technology. If my thoughts, sharing, preparation and experience is able to help a fellow pilgrim in anyway, or allow someone to participate thousand of miles away, i say that my blog has achieved its objective.
This is why, I share my built up and will share my expereiences via this online channel, with the hope that i can Make A Difference in someone's life.
I can already see that this blog, through the grace of God, has been viewed by readers around the world, on the various topics that I've posted on. I've recieved some comments from people who appreciate my posting, and i hope that i get to meet them in Madrid. I do not claim credit for this blog, and I only pray that this tool will be used by God to reach out to someone who needs it .
I am only His humble instrument in His grand plans.

Sharing the excitement for the @madrid11_en #wyd #madrid11
Tonight I met with 2 wyd pilgrims - Paul and Heather. Both are going under the Assumption Church banner, but they will be travelling separately. It is safe to say that all of us are quite excited about the upcoming pilgrimage of ours. There is a sense of anticipation, but we agreed that it is also very mix feelings and emotions about the trip.
We had a good laugh tonight about what to expect for this trip to Madrid , and we shared some travelling tips. I think that I'm the only one who is putting so much effort into getting ready for thr wyd, while both of them generally haven't even started preparing for the trip. Guess that is me being overly prepared and worried.
While all 3 of us will be traveling under different itinerary, i can safely say that we are united in Christ. For 3 of us, it will be our first wyd, and yes there is some nervousness about the trip. But the joy and eager anticipation of this trip out weights this nervousness
Heather is generally worried about the toilet and shower conditions, while Paul is quite cool about the whole thing. We did have many laughs about the shower facilities provided. Paul and I agree that it will be an interesting experience, and wished that we could take photos of it. Heather meanwhile shudders at the thought of it.
The best part is that tonight, we were joined by other friends from CHOICE, and we also got them actively involved in the discussion, jokes and excitement.
I hope that they too will join us on this pilgrimage spiritually and virtually.

Tips for travelling 3 - Speeding through Security Checks #wyd #madrid11
Security is a constant concern , especially in the aviation industry. Air travellers today are subjected to many different security checks as they prepare to board the aircraft and sometimes when they disembark.
I am sure that travellers to wyd in Madrid will be subjected to a number of security checks and here are some tips to help you speed through it . These tips are not intended for you to evade any security checks but to help you pass through it faster.
1. Loose items - when going through an Xray and Metal detectors, put all your loose items into a bag or your backpack, as you are queuing. Empty your pockets and dump everything into the bag.
2. Metal items - try not to wear heavy metal items like belts and heavy watches. They set of metal detectors. Take them off and throw then in your bag at the xray machine
3. Metal implants - if you have any surgical metal implants , bring along a doctors letter preferably in English and make sure it is legible.
4. Shoes - some security checks requires to xray your shoe. So wear easy slip on, so that it is quick for you to take it on and off.
5. Belts - if possible, wear travel belts i.e. belts with plastic heads so that you do not have the embarassment of holding on to your pants as you go through the metal detector.
6. LAG - stands for liquid aerosol and gas. Whe travelling by plane, The allowed amount on board the aircraft is 100 ml per item. Some airports require it to fit into a 1 liter ziplock bag provided at the airport. Others just make sure that it is not more then 100ml. Do not bring any amount more then that as they will be consfiscated.
7. Dangerous items - such as knives, guns, munition etc are not allowed. Dont even bother trying and arguing with the secuity officer on how small your pen knife is or how insignificant your nail file is just a waste of time. Give it up and shut up.
8. Laptops- be prepared to take out your laptops and any major electronic item and placed separately into the xray machines. At times you may be asked to turn it on just to verify if a genuine device.
9. Long queues - if you are genuinely late for your flight and in danger of missing your flight, inform the security officer, who may allow you priority screening. If not just keep quiet and wait in queue like the rest of us. Get point #1 ready,
10. After the metal detector - grab your stuff and quicky get out of the way. There are hundreds of people behind you , so please do not hold up the queue. Quickly grab your stuff and move to thhe packing table,

Shower facilities for #wyd #Madrid11 Pilgrims
Aiks. Pilgrims attending the wyd in Madrid will be treated to luxurious shower facilities throughout the cities especially near places of accomodation.
Imagine the logistics of providing showers to 1 million guest!
Oh yeah. Temperature will be soaring hot and humid. Probably bearable for us Malaysians, but heck its going to be hot and sweaty this August in Madrid .
Too bad photographs are not allowed. I would like a photo take of it and me using it ( in my swim shorts of course!)
Must remember to pack swim shorts and towel !

Tips for travelling 2 - Surviving long haul flights #wyd #madrid11

Many pilgrims will be descending unto Madrid in a few weeks time. How exciting and for many this will be their first long distance flight. Flying can be a really exciting experience where you will get to enjoy inflight movies, delicious food, and great service on a modern aircraft.
However, the downside is that seating conditions will be cramp, with relatively full flights, dry air and many time zones to cross. These factors alone will wear down the most seasoned of travellers. However there are some tricks to make the journey more bearable.
1. Seat - not all seats are alike, even in the same class. Popular seats like aisle seats or front of cabin seats offer more leg room to stretch and easier access to toilets. Other poorer seats are those located at baby bassinets, toilets or galley (kitchen) where there is high chances of crying babies, families with young children or busy activity near the galley and toilets. I recommend choosing an aisle seat towards the front of the cabin. If possible get a seat at the door, where you will have ample leg room. Check with your airline if you can pre book these seats before your departure.
If the aircraft is not full, try to get a seat where there is at least 1 empty seat next to you to spread out. You can change seats when the door of the aircraft is closed or when the seat belt sign is off. Do it quick because season travellers will be quick to move.
2. Clothing - dress comfortably with loose clothing, especially if you are taking a long flight. If you do not want to wear your shabby but comfortable clothings through the airport, then pack it into your hand carry luggage. Of course please remember to be decent on board and the cabin air will be cold. Nighties and boxer shorts are typically frowned upon. This will also ensure that your clothing will not be crumpled upon your arrival, and giving you a fresher feel when you land,
3. Basic toiletries - bring on board some basic items such as toiletries that you will need for the flight, including toothbrush, Cologne and comb. While some airlines will provide this on board, others may not. Disposable razors are also acceptable to carry on board.
4. Sleeping well - bring with you eye shades and ear plugs to cut out light and sound , so that you can get a more peaceful sleep. Take a couple of sleeping pills to help you get better sleep. Bring along an inflatable travel pillow that fits around your neck. This will support your head when you are asleep so that you do not wake up with a stiff neck, or end up drooling on the passenger next to you.
5. Time zones - before you depart, adjust your watch to the arrival time, and adjust your sleeping schedule on board the aircraft. If it is night time at your destination, go to sleep. If it is day time, try to stay awake as long as possible. You can also inform the cabin crew not to disturb you during meals, and only take your meals when you awake

6. Meals - do not worry. All full service airlines will provide food onboard the plane for free. If you are a big eater , portions could appear small. Pack a light snack like a muesli bar if you are afraid you will get hungry. There are normally extra food on the aircraft, and it is ok to request for a second helping. Normally the crew will be happy to oblige if they have any spare meals. For very long flights, there will normally be 2 servings of food and a snack in between. Some airlines even provide a snack bar at the certain locations
7. Water - drink plenty of water on board the plane. The air in the aircraft will be cold and very dry. You will need to stay hydrated. Bring along a small bottle of moisturizer for your skin. If possible avoid alcohol and coffee or drink it in modereation. If you dont want to bother the crew for water all the time, bring on board an EMPTY bottle eg 1 liter and request that they fill it up for you.
8. Exercise - sitting for long period of time may be uncomfortavle. So try to take a walk around the aircraft once in a while. It gives you some exercise, loosens the stiffen joints, and gets the blood flowing. Of course if you are in economy, you are only allowed to stay within the economy zone which is quite big. Also head to the tail of the aircraft where there is alot more space, where you can do some basic stretching exercises.
9. Entertainment - nearly all airlines provide in flight entertainment for long distance flights. This includrs movies and games to help with the time. Alternatively bring a good book, or a tablet/ laptop to watch some of your own preferred movies. This will help with boredom.
10. Respect - respect the privacy of your travelling companion. Whle you may be a chatty person, the bloke next to you may just want to sleep. Also remember to be polite to the crew, as they are there to help and assist you during your flight, and they are there to do their job. Also remember at the crew actually has a lot of authority in the interest of safety, and they can exercise the right to restrain you to your seat if you are disruptive.
11. Freshening up - just before arriving, go and freshen yourself up. Brush your teeth, wash your face, change back to your street clothing, put on some cologne, mosturize yourself, comb your hair. If you have a small face clothe, give yourself a quick wipe down. Simple actions like this really helps when you arrive, and you will feel alot more fresher and presentable when you arrive. Pls do not attempt to take a shower in the cabin toilet !
12. Keeping warm - the air temperature in the cabin will be controlled to about 25 degrees celcius or lower. Some may find this chilly, so mske sure you are dressed comfortably and warmly. All full service airlines will provide you with blankets and pillow for long haul flights. If you are cold, you may request for an extra blanket.
13. Not feeling well- if you are not feeling well at all, please inform the crew. The aircraft carries a certain amount of medication including aspirin, paracetamol, and some basic medication which can be provided to passengers without any problems. For emergency cases, all aircrafts carry a full physician kit which may include morphine, Epinephrine and other medication. The physician kit can only be used by a trained medical personel and authorized by the captain. The crew is also trained to handle medical emergencies and will page for a doctor or nurse if needed.
14. Safety - keep your seat belt on at all times, even if you are seated, as air turbulence can happen unexpectedly. If you are going to sleep, afix your seat belt over your blanket so that the crew knows you are safely secured to your seat.
15. Have fun - be cheerful and have fun on board the aircraft. When the crew is not busy, you can have a chat with them , or if possible get to kow your fellow passengers (be mindful of point number 10). Time flies when you are having fun. Similarly if you are in a bad mood, your flight will seem like an eternity.
Well hope these tips help you onboard your flight. It has helped me for my long haul and even short flights.
Have a safe flight! And remember to have fun.

Tips for travelling 1- Travel Documents for #wyd #madrid11

This will be the first long distance trip for many pilgrims attending the wyd in Madrid. Travelling can be fun, but it can also be a hassle with increase vigilance on security, especially when the governments are very concern on illegal immigrants.
One way for immigration officers to determine if you are a genuine traveller or an illegal immigrant is by looking at your passport. If your passport is well used with many stamps to various countries, it indicates that you are a genuine traveller. If your passport is brand new or with little usage on it, you may be subjected to further questionning.
So here are some travel tips to make your jouney as smooth as possible. These are general tips intended to help you on your journey and by no means gurantee your entry into any country as that remains at the discretion of the immigration authorities. It has worked for me so far.
1. Passport - Ensure that your passport is valid. Please check there is at least 6 months prior to the expiry of your passport. Many governments will not admit you into their country if you have less then 6 months validity on your passport. Most airlines will refuse you to board the aircraft if you do not have 6 months validity, as the governments will hold the airlines liable for passengers without proper travel documents
2. Visa - check with the local Spanish embassy if you require a visa to enter into Spain, which is a Shengen country. Generally a Shengen visa will grant you entry into any Shengen countries. Similarly a visa waiver from a shengen country will allow you entry into any Shengen countries. Do note there are special visa procedures for pilgrims and also there is a difference between a Shengen visa and a country specific visa. A country specific visa only allows you into the issuing country. Also note that a Visa does not gurantee entry into the country, as that is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Similarly airlines will deny boarding if you do not hold the proper visas for your journey.
3. Confirmation of accomodations - most immigration officer will want to know where you will be staying during the the duration of your visit. Bring along proof that you have confirmed your accomodations in the country or a home address of a friend if you are staying with them. A local phone number will also help if asked.
4. Return flight ticket - bring proof of your confirmed return flight tickets back to your home country. If you have plans to travel to another country or location, show your travel plans including confirmed tickets of arrangements made.
5. Finances - you will need to show proof that you are able to support yourself financially when in the country. Typically a reasonable amount of cash, travellers cheques and credit cards would be sufficient.
6. Vaccination - if you are coming from a country where certain diseases are endemic such as yellow fever, internationally recognized vacination certificates from proper health authorities may be required. Best to check with your local Spanish embassy.
7. Proof of employment or status - while this is not commonly required, you may be asked for a verification of your employment status. A letter from your employer or your school acknowledging your status as an employee or student may be helpful.
8. Copies of travel documents and credit cards - make copies of your travel documents in case they may be stolen. What I do is to scan these copies and load it up into an email account such as Gmail , where i can access it in case of emergencies.
9. Transit - if you are transitting via another european city, where you plan to break journey , prior to arriving into Madrid or even after WYD, you may be asked for the reason of your journey. Bring along proof that you will be continuing on to Spain as well as proof of your plan in Spain. This includes confirmed onward transportation details such as tickets, confirmed hotel booking and your Madrid11 registration form.
10. Dealing with the immigration officer - be truthfull and straightfoward in your replies to the immigration officer. Do not make long winded answers that are confusing. Keep the answers short and sweet, and most importantly make sure you answer the question asked. They have thousands of people to process, and will likely have very little patience. If you cannot speak english or the local language fluently, please inform the officer when asked a question.
Hope this helps the many travellers making their way to Madrid , and in general anyone who is travelling internationally.

Interview with a Malaysian Jesuit for #WYD @Madrid11_en - Fr. Simon Yong SJ, SFX, Malaysia

Name : Fr Simon Yong, SJ
Parish : St Francis Xavier, Petaling Jaya , Malaysia
Position : Parish Priest
Date of Ordination : 31 July 2000
1. How many people from your parish are going for the Madrid World Youth Day ?
There are about 44 pilgrims going from the Parish of St Francis Xavier , Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The youngest pilgrim is about 15 years old
2. Why do you think the World Youth Day is important to our Catholic Youths, and in general to our Catholic Faith ?
Catholism is global and universal religion. Today’s young people cannot live in isolation from that phenomenon , and there are many young people who are rediscovering the beauty of their faith
3. What do you hope that our pilgrims will achieve out of this World Youth Day ?
My hope is not quantifiable. Some people have approached me and said it was a waste of money to send the youth for the previous World Youth Day in Sydney. They come from the mentality of the need for a Return of Investment (ROI) . This isn’t about ROI , but about encountering Christ and the universal church in a special way. This encounter may not produce anything immediate, but the seed is sowed. What is important is the change of heart.
4. What is your advice for our Malaysian Pilgrims, so that they can achieve the most out of the Madrid World Youth Day ?
The World Youth Day is not a sightseeing holiday. Many of our youth will have plenty of opportunity to experience their own travels in the future. This World Youth Day is a spiritual journey. The Youth should avail themselves to all spiritual experiences. While in Madrid, they should partake in the Cathesis sessions, pray and encounter people. Know your priorities on why you are there.
5. How have you or your parish help prepare the pilgrims for this journey to Madrid ?
There are many sessions organized for the youth such as language sessions, history of Catholism in Spain, and getting to know more about the Catholic Church in Spain. The pilgrims are further encourage to attend mass, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and lead a prayerful life
There will be a Mass of Sending, on 7 August , Evening Mass @ 5.30 PM at Church of St Francis Xavier , Petaling Jaya.
6. Will you be attending the World Youth Day yourself ?
Yes I will be going, and this will be my second World Youth Day that I am attending .
7. As a priest, is the World Youth Day experience for you any different for a Lay Pilgrim? How so?
It is important that the priest are always with the pilgrims, and it is a beautiful experience to listen to the confessions of the young, and to see the youth. I will be there participating at the Opening Mass

The many people making @madrid11_en #wyd possible. A prayer for you!
Hosting and international event with over 1million attendees is no small feat. I take my hats off to the people of Spain, and their many volunteers who are working tirelessly to receive the pilgrims that are expected to descend upon Madrid.
Granted that 1 million is small in comparisson to the annual Haj that takes place in Mecca, but the Saudis have had many years of experience and deep pockets to manage the even larger number of pilgrims. However the annual Haj , well happens every year, and the organizers have had plenty of experience and are able to invest in infrastructre to cater to the large volume of people
In comparison, the Archdiocese of Madrid has had very little experience in organizing such a major event, the city may not be design to handle 1 million visitors in one go. And the Wyd organizers are largely volunteers, both locally and internationally. No funding is given by the government of Madrid and the event is largely self funded through registration fees and sponsors.
Putting all these combinations together, a pessimist would say that it is a recipe for disaster, waiting to happen. However i honestly truly believe that the organizers despite the challenges they face, are driven by a deep burning passion that comes from serving Jesus. In their tired nights, and hair pulling moments, God grants us the grace to carry on. I know for i've been in that situation where I am just driven and fueled by an unknown force. Under normal circumstances, i would collapse from exhaustion, but with the power of the Holy Spirit, I do not even feel tired.
Today I offer my prayers for all the organizers and volunteers preparing to greet all of us pilgrims at Madrid. May they be blessed for their loving sacrifice in doing His bidding, for His People for His Glory.
In the final month, preparations will run at a feverish pace. Nearing to the date of such a spiritual event, satan too will make his presence known to try and derail this. So i also pray for His holy protection over all those involved. May the divine armies of heaven stand guard over the organizers, volunteers and pilgrims as we all prepare for the this testimony of our faith.
Read more about the people making the World Youth Day possible on the official website of Madrid11. You owe them that much!
Dear Lord and Master.
It was your holy choosing that the people of Spain would host such an epic event of your choice, and i offer up my thanks to You, that they have accepted this daunting task to host all of us.
As the time gets closers to the date, Lord continue to guide them in their works. Grant them the patience, wisdom and perserverence needed to accomplish this task you have given to them. Stenghten them when they tire, heal them when they fall, and grant them peaceful rest when the sleep.
Lord , we also ask for your protection, from the many distractions and dangers that satan will throw at us. It will be his bidding to stop us, as we bring ourselves closer to You, and only You can protect us, to be our shield. Send forth your heavenly armies to proect us, especially the organizers and voluteers. St Michael watch over us.
Holy mother of God, watch over us and protect us, as we bear testimony to our faith and love for your Son.
Amen

Amen

The #wyd host family and volunteers @madrid11_en
Source : Madrid11 WYD
They come from all over the world:

Portugal, Congo, USA, Taiwan, Brazil, Lithuania… The arrival of foreign volunteers has created a special UN in the WYD central office. Many people have put aside their own jobs and friends in order to help to organise World Youth Day.
They live in university residences or with host families that become their true families when they feel so far away from their own homes. Some of them have become so fond of Madrid that are even thinking on staying longer after WYD.
Maria Ines was ready to host some pilgrims and volunteers during the third week of august. But she got a surprise when Andres, member of her parish, called asking her to host Portuguese volunteer during the next four months. He was arriving the next day to help in WYD .
Ines told me: “The last thing I thought is that I would host a Portuguese person. My brother was concerned about it and he said to me: you don´t know him at all.”
“I don´t know Portugal. When I was young my parents used to take Portuguese workers in, they looked starving… That´s all I can remember about them. I was a bit scared about the whole thing when I thought: There are no races for God, we are all a big family, God´s family, and if we don´t help each other, who will do it?”
So Ines felt she had to say yes in spite of her fears; so she said to Andres that from the following day up to the WYD, she would host Carlos, the Portuguese volunteer.
It has been a fantastic experience. Ines said to Carlos: “get used to the idea that in Spain I´m your mum”. She feeds him well so his parents don´t see him thinner when he goes back to Portugal.
“This is a multicultural family. I feel like a tiny part within a big family, but I belong to it and I feel honoured by it.”

What you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto Me. #madrid11 #wyd #bersihstories
This week I took a stand. I decided to make a stand for my principals, beliefs and for my human rights, to take an active interest in the recent happenings in Malaysia with regards to the rally for electoral reforms.
This week I took a stand against abuse
This week I made a choice to help a friend in need.
It is not easy to take a stand on any of these issues. Like those who had the courage to partake in the Bersih Rally in Kuala Lumpur, found themselves up against tear gas and water cannons. Now those who take a vocal stand online and in the community, face potential persecution for our beliefs.
It is not easy to take a stand on abuse, for in my mind, I wonder if it is genuine. It is easier to turn away for who am I to interfere. Isn't it easier to ignore the problem, as it is someone else's problem.
It is not easy to trust if somene is genuinely in need of help, nor can i help but wonder if I am being taken for a ride.
But I will take this stand, for my faith as a catholic has thought me the sanctity of basic human rights. To stand for what is right, and to fight what is wrong. I believe that corruption, electoral role rigging, gerry mandering and such acts are wrong and goes against the basic fundamentals of social justice. I believe that oppressions and violence agaisnt peaceful people is an act of social injustice.
But I will take a stand agaisnt abuse, like my earlier posting. No one should ever live in fear of abuse. As a Catholic, how can i turn my back on someone I know who is being abused. Who will help if not me. Change must begin with me first.
But I will take the stand to trust in the sincere plea for help. To trust that people who ask for help are truly in need for help. Who am I to judge if they have ulterior motives or intentions. The point is that i have been approached for help, and hence i should and must assist in anyway i can. For if I turn my back, lives may be destroyed and trust in humanity gone. I stand as an ambassador for Christ despite my doubts
I trust that despite my doubts and fears in all these points, that these events happened for a reason , and they cross my path for a reason. I trust that God in His almighty wisdom brought these challenges to me. Despite anything that may happen, I will stand knowing that i did what was right. If anything happens, or if I have been cheated, then it will be their own conscience with God. At least i know I did the best I can, as how I should.
I hope that when I am being tested, I will be found worthy
I apologise for the cryptic writting for I need to protect the privacy and identities of those involved.

A month to my departure for #madrid11 #wyd
Today ( well actually yesterday as it is past midnight now) is exactly a month prior to my departure to Madrid for the WYD. I think i am quite set and ready to go and just have to properly pack my bags. I do have a few minor things to finish off doing such as change my Euros and other minor stuffs, but I think all major items are prepared. I still have some minor adjustments to make for my accomodation in spain but that can be done over the next few days.
I am quite excited about this trip and also a bit nervous. I do not know quite what to expect. Despite being well travelled, this is actually my first trip alone for leisure. In the past I've always travelled with friends or family for holidays, and when travelling alone, it has always been for work, although i may extend a couple of days to sight see on my own. So yes, this is my first trip alone.
It kinda feels like that time, when I was headed off to university alone. There was plenty of preparations done, and on thst day, I boarded the plane off to UK to start my tertiary educaton. It is a similar feeling. Excited. Nervous. Do not know what to expect.
What I know is that there will be nearly a million catholics like me converging unto Madrid.
As i write this blog, I feel very blessed indeed that i am able to make this journey . Europe is not an affordable place to go and many who wish to attend can't because of the expenses. For myself I estimate that this would cost me anywhere between USD 2000 - 3000. That is quite a significant sum for many people, especially those in poorer countries. I hope that although they can not be there physically, they can be there in spirit with all of us.
So today i offer my prayers for those unable to make it to madrid, that they will still journey with us. I pray that they too will receive the many blessings and graces as those who are making this pilgrimage. Despite the distance separating us, may we all be united in Christ Jesus our Lord, to bear witness to our faith .

Blessed are those prosecuted in the name of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven #wyd #madrid11

Todays first reading was of the pharoahs of Egypt enslaving the children of Israel, to oppress them in everyway, and to supress them incase the rise up against the egyptians. Further on in the Gospel acclaimation, we are reminded that the kingdom of heaven is promised to those who are prosecuted in the name of righteousness.
This recent saturday, 9th July 2011 was a historical date in Malaysia, whereby the people took to the streets never seen before, in a rally called Bersih 2.0. This rally essentially called for Electoral reforms in the Malaysian election process. Many Malaysians, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion took to the streets in downtown KL to stand for their rights for clean and fair elections.
The organizers insisted that it will be a peaceful rally. However the police and the government took a heavy handed approach in clamping down on the this said rally. Despite the Supreme Ruler allowing the blessings to be organized in a local stadium, the government refused the organizers the fundamental right to a peaceful gathering. Riot police were deployed throughout the city, and roads into the city center were closed.
During the rally, many protestors were arrested. People wearing yellow colored t-shirts were detained - as many as over 1500 were detained by the police. Riot police responded to the rally with tear gas and chemical water cannons despite no signs of provocation.
Worst still, the despicable act of tear gas was shot into a local hospital and water cannons aimed at people taking refuge within the hospital compound. Government politicians claimed these actions were necessary, and insisted that those attended taking part were limited to 5000 people. Organizers believe that at least 50,000 people were at the rally, based on pictorial evidence
Although we are no longer in the days of the Pharoahs of Egypt, but oppression continues to exist today, even in a country like Malaysia. the rally was an apolitical rally, proclaiming the basic rights of fair and transparent elections, so that our basic rights of voting is not tarnished.
As a catholic, i realize that it is my catholic duty, not only to stand up for my own right, but that of my fellow human beings to ensure that basic human rights are protected and exercised. Despite the potential repercussions of supporting such rallies, it is my duty to fight for the weak and oppressed.
Jesus himself warns that those who stand for righteousness will be prosecuted, and truly enough many of those attending the rally suffered at the heavy handedness of the government actions.
However i also realise that this not only exist in Malaysia, but in many countries around the world today. Pilgrims coming from africa, middle east, south america, and asia face differing sorts of prosecution in their own countries.
When we gather in Madrid, we thus stand united in Christ, hence we stand against such prosecution and oppression happening not only in our own countries but in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. We will share a common promise to us, that the kingdom of heaven awaits us and we will be witness to this as we together form the Body of Christ.
Blessed Saviour
I pray in communion with my brothers and sisters around the world, especially those who face all sorts of prosecution for their ethnicity, religious belief. Those that face oppression and denial of their basic fundamental rights, those who stand in danger of their dignity as human beings.
Grant us the strength and will, to stand for our beliefs. Give us the courage to voice out agaisnt all forms of injustice, prosecution, and oppresion. Comfort those who suffer in silence, those who have been denied their rights to live as your beautiful creation.
Lord, bless our leaders today, despite their actions they have taken. Touch their hearts with your whispers of truth and mercy. Allow them to make a stand for justice and for your mercy. Destroy the barriers of fear, hatred and selfishness.
Blessed Comforting Mother,
Cuddle us like how you comforted your belived son in His time of fear and distress. Stand by us, like how you stood by Him at his crucifixion. May your loving presence prompt us to stand against the Pharoahs of today's world.
Amen

10 years since my last trip to #madrid11 @madrid11_en #wyd
It has been 10 years since my trip to spain as a university student. I recall that 6 of us, studying in UK , made a trip during the spring break to Spain. I mean they were still using Pesos at tht time!
We landed in Madrid, then made our way to seville, cordoda, bck to madrid and then to toledo. It was quite an adventure, staying in youth hostels, roaming the streets.
I still have fond memories of the trip, and also the number of close incidents where we knew we were being watched by dodgy people trying to steal our things. There was another group of singaporeans who were relieved of some of their valueables twice on the same trip
I also recall a relatively easy to use transport system, great food, lovely scenary, beautiful churches and friendly people. We also saw the flamenco dances and orange farms in Seville. We joined a pre easter practice procession in Cordoba. Caught a spanish dubbed movie. Stayed in a castle over looking toledo and watched the bull fight in Madrid.
Yes it was a very fun and adventurous trip for 6 uni students, moving around spain on a shoestring budget. I just some of the photos and it really brought a smile to my face.
I am looking forward to my trip back to Madrid - eating the tapas , paela and chocolate con churros. In fact i think i will try and reconnect back with a teenager i met in cordoba to see if he is going for th wyd. Having a spanish friend would surely be advantageous

412,000 pilgrims registered for #madrid11 #wyd
As of today, over 412,000 pilgrims have registered for the world youth day. It appears the numbers registering is accelerating closer to the date, as people are now surer of their calendar and hence able to commit to this great event.
It is still a far cry from the 1 million expected pilgrims, but then again it is usual for unregistered pilgrims to turn up. There will also be other groups of tourist and locals who will participate in the wyd as well as the army of volunteers locally and from abroad who will be there.
With the grace of God, the organizers of the wyd will hitbtheir expected target. They are already expecting 20,000 priest to attend this event. This brings to mind todays Gospel reading, where Jesus saw the large crowd and took pity on them for He said the harvest is plenty but the labourers are few. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out the labourers for his harvest.
Let this wyd be testimony that the harvest is indeed plenty, not only through those present at Madrid in person but also those present spiritually. In this testimony of faith, may the Lord of the harvest increase his laborers many folds through the calling of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Lord of the Harvest,
The harvest is abundantly plentiful, but your labourers are indeed few. Grant Lord that you may touch the hearts of your people, to open the ears of their heart to hear your gentle calling to be your true servant
Dear Lord, in todays mordernized and secular environment, the need for sincere shepherds of your flock is even more pressing. The sheep of your flock today faces many difficult challenges in our own spiritual pastures.
I also pray for those whom you have called to be priest and religious, as well as those in the seminary, that you strengthen their love and resolve in serving you. Guide them through their own journey and sturggles, so that they may continue to serve you with a faithful and sincere heart through the care of your sheep.
Lord, for those whom you are calling, help them to discern your quiet whispers in your heart. Silent the fears they have, open the path for them and guide them in their discernment.
Blessed mother, watch over those who serve your Son. These limited edition shepherds are invaluable to us. Guide them to always be faithful to your beloved Son, protect them form all harm, and comfort them in times of distress, so that they may always serve for the greater glory of your son,
Amen

Vaccination for #wyd @madrid11_en
The organizers of WYD is expecting approximately 1,000,000 pilgrims. As of today there is approximately 350,000 registered, with many un- registered last minute pilgrims turning up.
This alone can be can be a logistical and healthcare nightmare, not on to the pilgrms but also to the authorities of Madrid and Spain. Pilgrims will arrive from all over the world, mingling around with each other. In some cases, pilgrims will be staying in communal accomodations such as shools and community halls.
This alone is a perfect recipe for the spread of communicable diseases. While some will say that because this is God's events, he will protect us all from any harm including diseases.
I agree that is true, but God also gave us the resources and free choice to take precautions prior to our travels. If you can afford the trip to Madrid, generally you should be able to afford basic medical healthcare. Even for e largest pilgrimage in the world, the Haj, pilgrims are required to vacinate themselves before leaving for Mecca.
As such, i spoke to my doctor, who recommends a number of vaccinations, typically adminstered for large gatherings of people. The 2 recommended vaccinations are :
1. Meningococcal
2. Influenza / H1N1
In addition to this, I also received a booster for my hepatitis B vacination.
As the medical center recommends taking the vaccination over a period of time, I took my Hepatitis B booster last week, and my Meningococcal today. i will take the Influenze / H1N1 vaccine next week
I'm also considering taking a measles vaccine. I just read that the European Center for Diseases Control (ECDC Health Advisory) recommends vaccination against measles as well.
I truly recommend any and all pilgrims heading to Madrid to consult your local doctors for appropriate vaccinations. It isn't only just for your own protection, but is also a social responsibility to minimize the spread of potential communicable diseases.
If you believe there should be other types of vaccination required, pls do post it in the comments.
Again here is the list of Vaccinations :
1. Meningococcal - vaccine against meningitis
2. Influenza / H1N1
3. Hepatitis B
4. Measles
AGAIN PLEASE CONSULT YOUR LOCAL DOCTOR FOR FURTHER ADVICE !

The Lords Promise - a message to #wyd @madrid11_en pilgrims
"And I will be your guardian wherever you will journey, and I will bring you back into this land. Neither will I dismiss you, until I have accomplished all that I have said.” ~ Genesis 28:15
God's message to Jacob, as he journeyed is very appropriate to the pilgrims heading to Madrid for the 2011 World Youth Day. It promises his protection from harm, to bring us back home and that he will always be with us.
How glorious is this message that affirms those who will make this journey from their home lands. The world youth day will not only be a physical journey, but also a journey of faith. While many will see it as a testimony of our Catholic faith, perhaps we should view it as a testimony of God's promise to all of us.
This is His promise to Jacob, as well to us, for those who walk in faith with Him. Never will He will abandon us.
My Faithful Lord,
I pray today for those whom you have called upon on this journey of faith with you. Any path taken will always be filled with dangers, obstacles and distraction. Likewise, any journey that we take with you, will be one of dangers and obstacles.
Lord, as you have promised Jacob, be with us on our journey with you. Grant us your protection and strength, and most importantly Lord, when we are tired, hurt and in distress, teach us to always seek you as our faithful companion on our journey.
You call the tired and weary to you for your yoke is light. As we exhaust ourselves in this journey with you, grant us your healing rest, that we may refresh ourselves in you.
Mary, blessed mother of God, teach us to be faithful companions of your beloved son Jesus. As we walk this path with Him, through the brightest of days or the darkest of nights, grant us your guding light on this path of our.
Amen

Bringing souveniers and gifts for exchange @madrid11_en #wyd

WHEW! Just went out today to buy some stuff for my trip to Madrid. I have read that it is good to bring some souveniers from your home country, to share and exchange with the people we meet along the way.
So today, i went to central market (a well known place to purchase Malaysian souveniers and crafts) and managed to find some very affordable gifts. It was so affordable that i think i went overboard and purchased way too many!
I found these lovely key chains at a very reasonable prices, in various designs depicting well known Malaysian icons, or cultural symbols. So. I went ahead and bought 60 pieces! I think i over did it. Well if i have too many at the end of the day, i will just hand it out to anyone i meet .
While i was there i also purchased a large Malaysian flag, to waive in the air at any events! (Yes despite the shit that we read in the news about our country, i do still love my country) And also a disposable poncho for the summer rain. All in all, about a good RM 75 spent for this.
Here is another close up shot of some of the key chains

So in my previous posting, i mentioned that i have been planning for this Wyd for quite a while. Among one of the plans was to document my journey on a blog such as this that you are reading now.
I initially planned to purchase a mini PC or netbook, which is light weight and cheap, but then the tablet revolution took place nad the iPad was launched. I waited till this year to get the iPad, which the current up to date model is the iPad2 .

My criteria of the purchase was that it had to be lightweight, able to handle pictures and movies, easy to connect to the internet and approximatte within an rm 2k budget I guess my iPad2 fell within the category, except for the pricing, as i decided to purchase the highest end one i.e. 64gb 3g+Wifi. I even purchase a SD card reader to extract photos from my camera. Luckily i purchased it online and had it delivered to my office. There isn't any stock in retail despite the launch about a month ago!
Well as you can see the iPad has served me well as my primary blogging tool.

Why I am going to #wyd @madrid11_en
Some people have asked me why i am going to Madrid for the world youth day, and many have asked what i hope to achieve out of the wyd.
Honestly i do not know what i hope to achieve. I know 3 years ago, i wanted to go to the sydney wyd, but i was unable to, as it was avery busy year for Choice, and i did not have that many days of leave.I followed the wyd very closely online, reading blogs and news artciles, watching videos of the event, and really wishing i was there. It was then that i decided that i would attend the next wyd, where ever it may be held, and started my planning since then.
Hoever i still do not know why i am going to the wyd, and i can only answer that i am going there for the experience. Many people have testified to great miracles at the world youth day, including finding thie life direction and vocation at the wyd. For me, i do not even know what i am seeking , or what i hope to achieve
I know that the wyd is the single largest expression of our catholic faith, and the largest gathering of catholics from aroudn the world. It is definately more then a large picnic for rowdy youths, but actually an event that shows the world that our catholic faith is alive, relevant and happening!
Despite not knowing why i am going to madrid, i know that i felt called to it, and that ive been planning this for 3 years. Although i can't say that i am jumping up and down in excitement, there is a growing anticipation for the event building in my heart. I have been further blessed with a job in Malaysia Airlines, enabling me to travel to the wyd at a fraction of the price that most pilgrims will have to pay.
So i guess, i will go to the wyd with simple objective, to encounter Christ in all the pilgrims that he has called to Him in Madrid. That i will partake in this expression of faith, to meet like minded catholics from around the world, and to grow spiritually through the sessions held.
What can i expect? Well i decided to set expectations to a minimum, but i hope to have a prayerful week in Madrid. I look forward to adoration of the blessed sacraments around the city, to learn more about my faith and at a very minimum, a break from my hectic busy life.
Todays reading from Deutreronomy struck me as very relevant .
"For you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you so that you would be his particular people out of all the peoples who are upon the earth."
